REMOVE ENERGY DRINKS FROM OUR SCHOOLS
To: Walled Lake Consolidated School District Administration and School Board
As parents, guardians, and concerned community members, we are calling on Walled Lake Consolidated Schools to immediately remove all energy drinks—including but not limited to Celsius, Reign, Monster, Red Bull, Bang, and Ghost—from vending machines, cafeterias, and any other points of sale or access within school facilities.
Recent research from the University of Rochester Medical Center has revealed a disturbing link between taurine, a common ingredient in most energy drinks, and the growth of blood cancers such as acute myeloid leukemia. Taurine was shown to support the survival and aggressiveness of leukemia cells—posing a serious health risk, particularly for children and teens whose bodies are still developing [URMC, May 2024].
In addition to this cancer risk, energy drinks have long been associated with:
-
Elevated blood pressure and heart problems
-
Anxiety, mood swings, and sleep disruption
-
Behavioral and focus issues in school
Despite these known dangers, WLCPR has confirmed that Celsius and Reign energy drinks are currently sold in Walled Lake high schools.
We believe strongly in parental choice. If parents wish to provide energy drinks to their children outside of school, they are free to do so. However, public schools should not be enabling or profiting from the sale of potentially dangerous beverages to minors.
We respectfully demand:
-
The immediate removal of all energy drinks from school vending machines and cafeterias.
-
A district-wide policy prohibiting the sale or distribution of energy drinks on school grounds.
-
A commitment to prioritize student health and safety over commercial convenience or revenue.
Let’s work together to keep our schools focused on education—not on selling products linked to cancer and cardiac risks.
Please add your name and make your voice heard. Our children deserve better.
