Walled Lake Consolidated Schools: Declining Enrollment and Leadership Concerns

===============================================================================

Walled Lake Consolidated Schools (WLCSD) is experiencing a significant decline in student enrollment. This decline reflects broader dissatisfaction with the district’s leadership and policies. Parents increasingly opt for private, charter, or homeschooling options. They cite concerns over educational quality and administrative decisions as primary reasons for their choices.

Mask Mandate Controversy

A pivotal issue arose during the COVID-19 pandemic when WLCSD enforced a mask mandate for students. In February 2022, the Walled Lake Citizens for Parental Rights, represented by the Thomas More Society, challenged this mandate, asserting that it violated Michigan state law. This law prohibits the use of public funds to enforce mask requirements for individuals under 18.

Despite clear legal stipulations, the district persisted in its enforcement. This led to threats of legal action and eroded parental trust. The lack of leadership and responsiveness to parents' concerns ignited a fire that continues to expose significant and ongoing problems within the district.

Sex Education Concerns

Compounding parental dissatisfaction, the district has faced criticism for its approach to sex education. The Great Education Initiative has highlighted instances of "rogue sex education," where content deemed inappropriate was introduced without adequate communication or consent. The district has ignored parents' legal right to opt out of sex education.

Furthermore, the district has been negligent in its duties to remove teachers who overtly defy parents' wishes. Some teachers have even compelled students to engage with hyper-sexualized material. This overreach into sensitive areas of child development has intensified calls for greater transparency and respect for parental rights.

Leadership in Question as WLCSD Declines

The district’s leadership has come under scrutiny for its handling of conflicts within the community, particularly in Wixom. Poor hiring practices led to significant conflict within the Wixom elementary and resulted in the loss of teachers and staff. This mismanagement is a clear indication that the district's governance is in question.

Additionally, administrative responses have been inadequate, further diminishing confidence in the district’s ability to lead effectively.

The Community's Role in Change

The combination of contentious policy decisions, perceived disregard for parental input, and questionable leadership has driven many families to seek alternative educational options. For WLCSD to reverse this enrollment decline, a fundamental shift toward transparent, responsive, and community-focused leadership is imperative.

There must be a change in leadership! Parents cannot sit idly by and watch this decline. Instead, they must come together to ensure WLCSD rises back to a premier status.

A Call to Action for Parents

Parents need to join together, organize, and demand leadership change. It is essential for the community to hold the school accountable and effect positive change throughout the district. One way to start is by uniting with other concerned parents and voicing collective thoughts.
